Castle Conservation Club
The historic collections within the castle come into various categories. We have items relating to Robert Adam, tables, chairs and wall sconces to name but a few. There is also the part of the collection that was owned by the Kennedy family including original 18th Century items and some Adam revival pieces. In the Armoury there is one of the most important collections of 18th Century and early 19th Century flintlock pistols in the world. We have items that belonged to General later President Eisenhower in the castle. We also have collections of books, porcelain and kitchen items brought to Culzean by the Trust since the 1940s.
All these important collections require to be conserved for future generations to enjoy as we do today. Most of the items that you will find in a historic building like Culzean are made from organic materials such as wood, paper and fabric. Also natural pigments were used extensively. Organic material deteriorates over time this cannot be avoided. But we can slow down this natural process through conservation. To achieve this aim we need people. Perhaps yourself.
If you would like to join The Culzean Castle Conservation Club please contact us. It could be for just a couple of hours per week or per month and it will cost you nothing. A member of our dedicated staff will give you training in collections care and environmental monitoring.
As a member of The Conservation Club you could be cleaning and completing condition reports on books, furniture, fabrics, weapons and even the chandelier.
